Tiger Woods has undergone back surgery after an injury-plagued 2024 season.
A statement posted on Woods’ official X account said the 15-time major winner underwent lumbar spine microsurgery for nerve compression in his lower back on Friday.
The statement added that Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi of the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach performed the operation and deemed it a success.
Woods, who has undergone several back surgeries over the past decade, said: “The surgery went well and I hope it will relieve the back spasms and pain I have been experiencing for most of the 2024 season.
“I’m looking forward to getting started on this rehabilitation and getting ready to return to my normal activities, including golf.”
Woods, 48 — who nearly lost his right leg in a car accident in 2021 and underwent ankle surgery two years later — has played just five times on the PGA Tour in 2024.
He withdrew from the Genesis Open in Los Angeles in February in the second round before making a record 24th consecutive cut at the Masters in April.
But he shot 82 and 77 over the weekend at Augusta National and was eliminated early from the U.S. PGA Championship and U.S. Open.
Woods’ last appearance was at the Florida Open in July, where he matched his worst two-round stroke count at a major.
He shot 79 and 77 at Royal Troon and his score of 14 over 156 was close to being the last.
Woods then expressed his desire to play next year’s Open at Royal Portrush.
