Rafael van der Vaart: ‘Arsenal won’t win the title this season, and maybe never with Mikel Arteta’

Former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart says he is worried about Arsenal in the long term.

Ahead of Sunday’s north London derby, the Dutchman dismissed the Gunners as Manchester City’s main title contenders this season.

And Van der Vaart says he does not think Arsenal can continue to challenge for the title after narrowly missing out on it in the last two seasons.

Van de Vaart, who scored 28 goals in two seasons for Spurs between 2010 and 2012, told BetMGM: “A lot of people think Arsenal will be the ones to serve Manchester City, but I don’t agree. City and Liverpool seem to me to be the two best teams.”

“It’s very difficult to keep going and going, season after season, and I look at the Arsenal team in the long term and I worry about them. I don’t see Arsenal winning the Premier League this season.

“I was really impressed with Liverpool when they beat Manchester United. They looked very stable and everything looked very easy. City are definitely the favourites, but you can’t overlook Liverpool.”

Van der Vaart believes Tottenham will have the advantage on Sunday due to the absences of midfield trio Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino.

If there was ever a time for Spurs to show what they’re capable of, it’s now.

“I give Tottenham a real chance on Sunday,” Van der Vaart said. “No matter what team you represent, if you lose two or three really good players, especially all in the same position, it makes things very difficult. I really think Spurs can take advantage of that.”

“If there was ever a time for Spurs to show what they are capable of, it is now, and this is the kind of result that Ange [Postecoglou] “He needs to show that he is a manager capable of taking Tottenham to the next level.”
