Manchester United recorded the highest cumulative league attendance in Europe last season

Last season, Manchester United recorded the highest cumulative domestic league attendance of any European club, although it was their worst Premier League performance ever.

An injury-hit United side struggled to eighth under Erik ten Hag, eclipsing the Red Devils’ previous worst campaign in 2013-14 when they finished seventh.

However, that hasn’t stopped fans from turning up in large numbers at Old Trafford and a new UEFA report has revealed they are the most supported club in the domestic leagues in 2023-24 with 1,397,148 spectators attending their 19 Premier League home games.

Manchester United’s total for all competitive matches was 1,834,291, which puts them just behind Borussia Dortmund, who qualified for the Champions League final, on 1,951,745.

Dortmund also recorded the highest average league attendance of 81,305, but played 17 home games to United’s 19.

UEFA’s report on the European club talent and competition landscape, published on Thursday, reveals that 16 clubs recorded cumulative attendances of more than one million last season.

Three other English clubs – West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal – occupy the last three places in the top 10 in terms of cumulative attendance across all competitive matches.

Manchester City’s 19 Premier League games were watched by 1,013,395 spectators, according to UEFA. The Premier League leads the way in terms of overall attendance, with 14.7 million spectators. This is a 4% drop, but the average stadium capacity in 2023-24 is down 5% from the previous season.

For the first time in 2023-24, the average Premier League match lasted more than 100 minutes, according to the report.

Last season was the first in which domestic leagues around the world implemented a directive from the game’s lawmakers to more accurately calculate stoppage time, as first seen at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The average length of a match in the English Premier League increased from 98.5 minutes in 2022-23 to 101.6 minutes last season.

Games lasting more than 100 minutes were once rare in England but have now become the norm. The share of games lasting more than 100 minutes has increased from 25% in 2022-23 to 68% last season.
