Leicester City owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha launched an angry attack on the club’s players during a summit meeting earlier this week, Telegraph sport can reveal.
Srivaddhanaprabha, known at the club as ‘Top’, confronted the team over the sacking of head coach Steve Cooper and the fallout from the Copenhagen Christmas party.
At the meeting on Tuesday at the club’s training ground, the Leicester chairman accused the players of letting down Cooper, who was sacked on Sunday after just 12 Premier League matches in charge.
Although the decision to part ways with Cooper was made solely by Srivaddhanaprabha, the Thailand-based businessman felt the players were partly to blame for producing a number of poor performances since their return to the top division .
It appears the owner was also bitterly disappointed by images of the players in Copenhagen hours after the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.
Videos went viral showing Leicester players partying at a nightclub with a sign also visible with the words “I miss you Enzo”, which appeared to be a clear reference to Cooper’s predecessor Enzo Maresca.
The Christmas party had been sanctioned by Leicester and Cooper ahead of the weekend and Copenhagen is a regular destination for the team.
However, Srivaddhanaprabha told players that the video scenes were ill-timed and did not present a positive image of Leicester as a family club, which was a huge source of pride for his late father, Khun Vichai.
The confrontation is believed to have been measured, with the players all sitting in silence while the owner spoke to them. Senior players are also said to have accepted these remarks.
Leicester declined to comment on the meeting.
Hunt for new managers
Leicester, last season’s league title winners, are one point above the relegation zone and are looking for a new manager.
At the meeting, players were also told that the next appointment would be that of a “free agent” and that no compensation would be paid to secure the new man.
That excludes West Bromwich Albion’s highly-rated Carlos Corberan, who would cost more than £3m to remove from the Hawthorns.
Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter and former West Ham manager David Moyes have been ruled out by Leicester as potential candidates.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former Manchester United striker, is in the frame. The 48-year-old recently took charge of United for four matches as interim manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag.
In that brief spell, he guided United to two wins over Leicester – first in the Carabao Cup and then in the Premier League.
