England have named two uncapped players in their 17-man squad for the three-Test tour of Pakistan in October.

The day after England ended their Test summer with a disappointing eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka, they announced their squad for their next adventure, a tour of Pakistan.

Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took charge of the 2022 Test team and transformed their fortunes, including a stunning 3-0 win in Pakistan, the first ‘Bazball’ overseas tour.

Stokes returns to the squad as he continues his recovery from a torn hamstring that ruled him out of the tour of Sri Lanka, with Zak Crawley also returning to the top of the order after a fractured finger.

Eight players from the squad from two years ago will return to the subcontinent country, in a tour already affected by uncertainty over venues, which have not yet been confirmed.

Brydon Carse has not been selected by England at Test level, but has played in ODIs and T20s. The South African-born fast bowler spent three months of the season on the sidelines for historic breaches of betting rules, and did not return to action until August 28.

Josh Hull retains his place after making his Oval debut against South Africa, with England keen to take charge of the 6ft 7in left-hander’s development.

As spinners Rehan Ahmed and Jack Leach return to join Shoaib Bashir in a strong seam attack.
