Ben Chilwell is hoping to be included in Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad with the left-back unlikely to be sent on loan to Turkey.
Chelsea are due to field their Premier League squad on Friday and Chilwell could be included, although he has so far been ruled out of head coach Enzo Maresca’s plans.
The club were open to the idea of loaning Chilwell out, but with the Turkish transfer window set to close without a deal being agreed, the former England international will remain at Stamford Bridge until at least January.
Chilwell was not kept out of the first team altogether, like other players. He trained away from the first team when Maresca had a full squad, but was recalled when there were injuries or absences to help fill out the squad.
It is not yet known whether Chilwell will return to full-time first-team training if he is included in Chelsea’s Premier League squad, for whom he counts as a homegrown player.
Chilwell was surprised to be left out of Chelsea’s Europa Conference League squad but being included in the 25-man Premier League squad would save him further disappointment.
Maresca had warned that Chilwell and other unwanted players could not hope to play at all if they failed to find a place elsewhere. But it was also acknowledged that the 27-year-old had done nothing to merit punishment and had not turned down any opportunity to leave Chelsea.
Chelsea also know that Chilwell has not played a senior game since April and completely ruling out his chances of playing football until January would make it even more difficult for them to find a move for him in the next transfer window.
Even if he is not named in the Premier League squad, Chilwell would still be eligible to play in the Carabao Cup, in which Chelsea face Barrow on September 24.
If Chilwell is not going anywhere for now, David Datro Fofana could move to Turkey before the transfer window closes on Friday. The Ivorian forward, 21, saw a move to Greek club AEK Athens fall through but he still intends to leave Chelsea.
