Bolton Rugby Union Club’s under-14s hosted their Rochdale counterparts and, although they found themselves on the wrong end of a 24-12 scoreline, they put in a fighting display.

In a hard-fought match, the U14s faced a powerful and well-drilled Rochdale team.

Despite Bolton’s valiant efforts and moments of brilliance, Rochdale emerged victorious in a match which showcased the skill, determination and teamwork of both teams.

The match started with Rochdale asserting their dominance from the start.

A driving run from their number seven broke through the Bolton defense resulting in the first try of the game, which was successfully converted.

Bolton, however, responded brilliantly, as Brody crossed the middle for a driving try. Luka’s precision with the boot allowed Bolton to equalize with the conversion, making the score 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

With the referee swap, the second quarter saw increased intensity.

Rochdale took the lead again, breaking through the Bolton line and gaining 30 yards before being brought down in a heroic tackle by Joel.

Despite Bolton’s efforts to disrupt their attack, Rochdale retained possession, scoring another try, which they converted.

Their momentum continued as they charged again, managing to score despite a controversial call.

This time the conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 19-7 at halftime.

After the break, both teams came back with renewed determination, resulting in a hard-fought and scoreless quarter.

Bolton’s scrum was immense and the tackling from both sides was relentless.

Some superb passing and teamwork was on display, with several Bolton players breaking through the Rochdale defense but unable to capitalize.

The players’ growing strength and resilience was evident in every scrum and tackle.

In the final quarter, Bolton came out with fire in their stomachs, determined to reduce the gap.

Their perseverance paid off when they managed to get back to the try line, with a well-deserved try eventually scored.

However, Jack and Dane’s conversion attempts narrowly missed the goal.

Rochdale countered with a huge kick and looked set to score again, but Brody’s defensive, quick kick over the try line prevented some scoring.

Despite the final score, there were plenty of positives for Bolton’s youngsters.

They included Brody’s powerful runs and crucial defensive plays, as well as Joel’s heroic tackle to stop Rochdale’s 30-yard break.

There was also some outstanding teamwork, passing and tackling from Bolton, showing their potential against strong opposition.

“It was a tough game against a great team,” Bolton coach Alex Youngman said.

“The boys showed incredible courage, skill and teamwork.

“Rochdale’s power and speed made the difference, but we are proud of the way we played.

“These are the games that help us grow.”

Bolton U14s may not have been victorious, but their performance left the crowd in no doubt about the talent and determination of this promising young team.
