Ange Postecoglou was pleased with Fraser Forster’s performance in Tottenham’s first game since Guglielmo Vicario’s injury.
The veteran goalkeeper is set for a long career in Spurs’ first team after Italy international Vicario underwent surgery following an ankle injury suffered in the 4-0 Premier League win over Manchester City.
Postecoglou confirmed that his first-choice goalkeeper faces “months” of inactivity, while emphasizing that the club will not sign a free agent to act as cover.
As a result, Forster is expected to remain in goal for the foreseeable future and restarted life as a No.1 in Thursday night’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Roma.
The 36-year-old, who many would argue may not be as adept with the ball at his feet as Vicario, made a series of smart saves in the draw against the crisis-hit Italian club – even s There was an incident when Forster was almost caught trying to play from the back.
Postecoglou believes, however, that Forster’s experience and the fact he has already played in the competition this season has helped the former England international settle in.
“He’s an experienced guy and he probably figured that’s why he’s here, so needed to come in and be that reliable goalkeeper for us,” he said.
“It helped, he’s already played this year, it wasn’t his first game. He played his part tonight and it’s just disappointing that we couldn’t capitalize on the football we played to get the three points. I don’t think he lacks confidence, but it’s still good for him to at least make a few big saves for us tonight and get him back in the group.
Forster looks almost certain to start in goal on Sunday as Spurs host Fulham in the Premier League.
