by Manchester United have confirmed the true cost of sacking Erik ten Hag and replacing manager with Ruben Amorim.
Ten Hag was finally fired at the end of October, the day after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham and just three months after being rewarded with a new contract.
The writing was seemingly on the wall for Ten Hag ahead of the contract extension, having overseen United’s worst start to a season in the Premier League last season. A record he broke this season.
INEOS’ decision to give Ten Hag improved terms after winning the FA Cup increased the payment that was due to Ten Hag after even more miserable results.
United’s latest financial report revealed that Ten Hag’s sacking cost the club £10.4million to pay the manager and various members of his coaching staff.
The subsequent hiring of Amorim and his backroom team cost a further £11 million, bringing the combined total to almost £22 million.
The cost appears to have been passed on to the club’s supporters as, in the same report, United confirmed the rise in ticket prices for members to £66 per match and removed discounted prices for children and over-65s for the rest of the season. Tickets for children previously cost £25.
The decision was branded “offensive” by the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST), and a supporters’ protest is now planned for the weekend.
