Ruud van Nistelrooy leads race to become new Leicester manager

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is the favorite to become Leicester’s new manager.

The Dutchman looks set to replace Steve Cooper at the King Power Stadium following the Welshman’s dismissal last weekend, according to the PA news agency.

Van Nistelrooy is only weeks out of work after leaving United after four games as interim manager, taking the reins following the departure of Erik ten Hag after joining in the summer as manager.

Two of those four games were wins over Leicester in the Carabao Cup and Premier League.

The Foxes have remained tight-lipped but on Wednesday evening were expected to have first-team coach Ben Dawson face the media ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

Leicester considered a number of candidates, with Graham Potter and David Moyes linked, but the two experienced men were never seriously considered.

If a deal is agreed, as reported by the Telegraph, it will be Van Nistelrooy’s second first-team managerial role, having previously managed Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in 2022-23 and guided them to the KNVB Cup .

Leicester’s next game is at Brentford on Saturday, with Tuesday’s home clash against West Ham a possible first game at the King Power Stadium.

Cooper was dismissed after just 12 games following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester.

Despite being out of the relegation zone, the Foxes hierarchy did not believe the former Nottingham Forest manager represented the best chance of remaining in the division.

There were concerns about the way he ruled, including poor performances, reports of friction between players and a lack of connection with supporters.
